SUMPUR KUDUS, Indonesia — On the night of Nov. 19, 2025, inside a West Sumatran rainforest, Septian “Deki” Andriki fell to his knees in the mud and wept. A former elementary school physical education teacher turned self-taught botanist, Andriki had just found the object of a 13-year obsession: Rafflesia hasseltii, a parasitic, leafless flower that had not been confirmed in the wild for more than a decade.
Andriki, working alongside Oxford Botanic Garden’s Chris Thorogood and researcher Joko Ridho Witono of Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), reached the site after a nearly 23-hour journey through dense, tiger-inhabited forest in Sijunjung Regency. The team had been tipped off by a local resident earlier this year. When they found the bud unfurling its blood-red, white-speckled petals, Andriki said he was overcome. “After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” he later said. “I just cried.” A forest ranger initially thought Andriki had been possessed by spirits, Thorogood recalled, describing himself as “the luckiest guy alive” to witness the moment.
A Rare and Vulnerable Parasite
Rafflesia hasseltii is one of roughly 42 recognized species in the genus Rafflesia, a bizarre family of chlorophyll-less parasites that live inside host vines for years, revealing themselves only during rare blooms that can span nearly a meter in diameter. The flowers emit a rotting-meat odor to attract carrion flies for pollination.
The rediscovery marks a significant scientific milestone. Researchers estimate that about two-thirds of known hasseltii populations grow outside legally protected forests, leaving them exposed to logging and land conversion. The 2025 expedition, part of a multinational research effort backed by the University of Oxford, is collecting DNA from over a dozen Rafflesia variants across Indonesia. Scientists hope genetic mapping will explain the plant’s unpredictable blooming patterns — and provide data to argue for stronger protections where none currently exist.
The Broader Race to Name New Species
The Sumatran discovery is an unusually dramatic chapter in a far larger enterprise: the ongoing work of identifying and naming the thousands of undocumented plant species that share the planet — many for the first time, and some possibly for the last.
At the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, scientists describe roughly 200 new species each year, accounting for about one in every 10 new plants named globally. In 2025, the Garden highlighted a Costa Rican moonlight cactus, Selenicereus, which took a tropical entomologist two decades to confirm. The cutting was handed to now-retired curator Barry Hammel, who waited until the plant finally flowered in his own yard to confirm it was a new species, believed likely endangered.
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History added nine new species, three new genera, and one new subgenus in 2025. Among the findings: Rojovitis, a new subgenus of Vitis — the genus that includes cultivated grapes — built around two newly identified, threatened wild grape species from Chiapas, Mexico. It is only the third recognized subgenus of Vitis in nearly a century.
Citizen Science and Drone Discovery
Not every find requires a rainforest expedition. In Big Bend National Park in Texas, volunteer botanist Deb Manley spotted small, fuzzy plants with maroon flowers while walking a remote desert stretch. She uploaded images to the citizen-science platform iNaturalist, triggering a chain of expert identification that led to the description of an entirely new genus — the “wooly devil” — the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.
In Hawaii, researchers used a drone fitted with a robotic collecting arm to reach an inaccessible cliff on Kauai. The device returned samples of a previously unknown carnation-family plant, Schiedea waiahuluensis. Scientists believe it may be the first new plant species ever discovered by drone.
The Implications of Dark Extinction
Taken together, these discoveries tell two stories. The first is one of persistence: a two-decade wait for a cactus, a chance photograph from a volunteer, a robotic arm reaching where no hand could. The second is more sobering. Many newly named plants are already among the rarest on Earth — restricted to a single mountain range, sand dune, or cliff face — and often under immediate threat from logging or habitat loss.
Botanists argue that naming a species is the necessary first step before any legal protection or conservation funding can exist. A plant without a name is, in practical terms, a plant without a defense. Scientists estimate thousands of plant species remain undescribed, many declining toward extinction before formal recognition — a phenomenon known as “dark extinction.”
Each year’s tally of new species is not simply an inventory of nature’s surprises. It is a race against time, run one flowering cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
